Clemson
University is a land-grant university of South Carolina is located in the southern Appalachian Mountains in the Piedmont Region of South Carolina, one of the most biologically diverse areas in North America for ecology and conservation biology studies and restoration of natural ecosystems. Clemson is located near forests, lakes and mountains and the Atlantic Ocean is only a few hours away. In addition to the 1,400-acre campus, Clemson University's real estate holdings include over 32,000 acres of forestry and agricultural lands throughout the state, most of which support comprehensive research programs.
Entomology Program research facilities located on or near campus
- Long Hall houses Entomology faculty offices; space for graduate students; conference rooms; lecture rooms; and teaching laboratories. Long Hall also houses the Clemson University Arthropod Collection and Museum and a weather station.
- Cherry Farm Insectaries, include an Apiculture Research lab, a Biodiversity of Medically Important Arthropods lab, a Hemlock Wooly Adelgid lab and an Urban Entomology lab, are located two miles south of campus on the shores
of Lake Hartwell. The Cherry Farm complex includes two laboratory/office
buildings that house faculty and graduate students, laboratories, rearing rooms, a butterfly
house, an apiculture workshop, a well-equipped woodworking shop,
an equipment shed, greenhouses, and an equipment storage building.
Adjacent to the building complex is a 30-acre field-research area
and an Apiary.
- Calhoun Field Laboratory is an on-campus field site for long-term research in sustainable farming practices. The 15-acre site includes a 5-acre organically-certified vegetable, herb, and cut-flower farm, which supplies produce for both the Campus Farmer's Market and the CFL-Campus Supported Agriculture program. Research and demonstration areas devoted to cover crops, trap crops and organic pest control are also located at the CFL.
Shared Facilities located on or near campus
- Archbold Tropical Research and Education
Center, located in Dominica, is ideally suited for studying tropical terrestrial and agricultural ecosystems and their interaction.
- Biosystems
Research Complex is a multi-disciplinary research facility focused on agriculture, environment and human health.
- CU Genomics Institute is
a research and training facility focusing on structural and functional genomics of agricultural and horticultural crops and their pests.
- Scanning Electron
Microscopy Facility provides access to transmission and scanning electron microscopes. A confocal microscope is also available.
- Multi-user
Analytical Laboratory provides access to quantification of pesticide residues, secondary metabolites and hormones as they relate to research.
- Musser
Farm is a 240-acre fruit tree research farm located along the shore of Lake Hartwell.
- Simpson
Research Center, located 8 miles from Clemson, offers opportunities for field experiments.
- University Library has more than1.6 million volumes, documents and reports, and provides access to scholarly article databases, journals, and advanced books in entomology and other ag and biological sciences. Library associates provide specialized research instruction and consultation programs for graduate students.
Four regional Research and Education Centers (RECs):
- the Coastal REC, located in Charleston, is a regional leader and nationally recognized center of excellence for vegetable research;
- the Pee Dee REC, near Florence in the northern coastal plain, focuses on pest management of cotton, tobacco, and turfgrass, agroecology, and wildlife ecology; and
- the Edisto REC, located in the southern coastal plain near Blackville, is currently focusing on integrated management of cotton, soybean, peanut, and small grain pests.
- the Clemson Institute for Economic and Community Development (Sandhill REC) is located near Columbia in the center of the state. Here you will find a 2,500-square-foot house foundation and outdoor classroom, the Termite Technician Training Center, jointly operated by Extension Entomology and the Department of Pesticide Regulation.
