Experience
After graduate work at the University of Florida in entomology and ecology, Dr. Farnsworth spent a post-doctoral year in ecology at the Institute of Ecology, UGA and subsequently conducted research and taught there for ten years. At that time his research focus was in freshwater tidal marsh dynamics, tropical forest productivity and economic valuation of ecological attributes of tropical forests. He shifted his focus to the application of ecological principles to development issues in Southeastern U.S., Latin American and the Caribbean, working for fifteen plus years on agriculture, energy, transportation, water supply, sewage and solid waste programs; watershed and coastal zone management; parks and protected areas development; and institutional capacity building. In this capacity, he worked for UGA's Institute of Natural Resources, Southeastern Wildlife Services, Inc., owned his own consulting firm, and most recently was Regional Environmental Advisor-Caribbean for Inter-American Development Bank. Since his retirement from Inter-American Development Bank, he has returned to entomology research, focusing on firefly communication.
